Curriculum
The course of study at St. Charles complies with the curriculum competencies adopted by the Archdiocese of Santa Fe and the New Mexico State Department of Education.

In our search for excellence, St. Charles students are given every opportunity to develop their talents fully. We believe in educating the whole person.

Fine Arts
Art
artSt. Charles school has a premier art program with an experienced certified art instructor. The program provides art instruction from kindergarten to 8th grade on a weekly basis. Students are introduced to basic art concepts from the early grades and these concepts are built upon and become more advanced in the older grades. The art lessons allow students to explore their own talents as well as experience a variety of art materials and processes including pencil, oil pastel, chalk, watercolor, clay, tin, wire, scratchboard, ink, painting, printmaking, collage, sculpture, ceramics and jewelry making.  Students learn about many artists and their styles. They emulate these art styles through their own work.

Every year our art program ends with a judged art show where students can display and be proud of their work. Visitors to our art show often comment on how impressed they are at the quality and variety of the art. We are very proud of what the students can accomplish. Our students' artwork is represented in the community through the NM Arts and Crafts Fair and the NM State Fair. Students at St. Charles receive a well-rounded art experience from the creation of the work to the pride they feel when they see their completed masterpiece.

musicMusic
Music is offered to all students at St. Charles from K through 8th grade, twice a week. Children sing at all church services in addition to singing in the classroom. Moreover, a musical is presented at Christmas time involving the entire elementary school. The mid school also participates in the all-school musical program at Christmas time with their own
presentations.

In addition to the regular curriculum, there is a choir that meets twice each week, formed from students in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades who lead the singing at all services and sing special songs as well. They have performed the National Anthem at several sporting events (UNM, Isotopes...).

Physical Education
St. Charles school provides the perfect environment for kindergarten through eighth grade to engage in healthy, safe and fun activities. Throughout the year they are given the opportunity to play new and different sports, which are designed for every level of fitness. The goal of the PE program is for all students to learn to enjoy exercise and to develop an attitude that fitness is for life.

Athletics
Here at St. Charles, we are dedicated to creating the “well rounded” student and believe that athletic competition is an essential part of school life. Our philosophy is based on the old saying, “It doesn't matter if you win or lose, what's more important is how you played the game.”  Sportsmanship and team participation is number one in our book. Many of our athletes try out for high school teams with great success and come back to tell us that no matter where they are now, they are still Cardinals at heart!

Full Time Registered School Nurse
St. Charles is one of the few Catholic Schools in the area to have a registered nurse. The school nurse helps insure that the students are working at their potential by helping them stay healthy. She does this by administering medications as needed, doing on-going assessments, and teaching health classes on a regular basis.

Our nurse also helps maintain a healthy school environment by making sure all students are up-to-date with their immunizations and making sure teachers are aware of any health issues. Yearly health screenings help catch any potential problems and are forwarded to parents for further evaluation.

Our nurse is also an expert in administering first-aid as needed and assisting when emergencies arise.

Kinder Program
kinderThe St. Charles Borromeo School Kindergarten Program is centered on a warm, comfortable and loving classroom environment where children enjoy praying, sharing, working, playing and growing together each day. Our program is an integrated program where all subjects come together and build upon each other.  Center to the program is our Catholic Religious Philosophy of living Jesus’ commands each and every day by learning about and loving God and learning to love others as ourselves as we treat each other the way each of us wants to be treated.

At St. Charles we strive to meet the individual needs of every kindergarten student as we build a sense of cooperation and communication between home and school. Our days are full of fun and laughter, song and movement, quiet and boisterous, busy and playful as we work and grow to learn the ‘Cardinal Way’ of becoming loving and productive citizens of our school, country and God’s wonderful world.

Literacy
St. Charles Borromeo School is completely committed to the development of students’ reading, writing and comprehension abilities. Through record of oral reading, observation, and assessment of students’ writing samples our reading professionals guide instruction on an individual basis.

literacySpanish
Elementary Spanish
Spanish lessons are devised using a combination of games, oral, written, and listening exercises, as well as singing songs. The classes stress the advantages of being bilingual and at the same time recognize the Spanish culture in our state and across the country.

Mid School Spanish
The mid school program is designed to promote the enjoyment and appreciation for the Spanish Language. It is designed to expose the children to the traditions and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. We at St. Charles are proud to say that our Spanish program has attained a good reputation throughout the years. Students yearly return to St. Charles saying that they were well prepared for high school Spanish. Many have been placed in honors or advanced programs.

Technology
technologySt. Charles Borromeo School is dedicated to the goal of seamlessly integrating the use of technology into all areas of the curriculum. Lower elementary teachers develop age-appropriate projects to help students learn the basics of computer operation. Upper elementary students use visual thinking software to help them identify their ideas for reports and projects, to organize them, and to transform their visual concept maps into outlines and rough drafts.

Middle school is the level at which technology is fully integrated into the regular curriculum areas. Teachers from each core curriculum area develop technology-rich projects for students. These projects relate to real-world problems, require in-depth work, and help students develop problem-solving skills.
