Data Driving Instruction

St. Charles Borromeo Catholic School gives several standardized assessments each year to gather data to better inform instruction for each individual student.

The Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) are a set of standardized tests given annually to school students in the United States. These tests are given to students at St. Charles beginning in 3rd grade and progressing until Grade 8 to assess educational development. The ITBS was designed by the University of Iowa's College of Education, as part of a program to develop a series of nationally accepted standardized achievement tests. The ITBS covers numerous areas of educational knowledge, including English language use, math concepts and problem solving, social studies, science, geography and map use, and source use. The ITBS is used in the majority of schools in the State of Iowa, both in the public and private education sectors. The tests have been widely used in other regions of the United States. Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) is designed specifically to help us answer the question: Are our students making progress in reading? SRI provides information for teachers to work more efficiently by fostering improved planning for instruction as well as the ability to better match students to the appropriately leveled text, encouraging growth and success.

SRI…

  • Provides ongoing assessment.
  • Encourages accountability.
  • Is based on the Lexile Framework for Reading.
  • Is computer-adaptive.
  • Generates actionable reports.
  • Matches readers to text (Scholastic Reading Inventory, Educator’s Guide).
